York County Community College / Pratt & Whitney Partnership
With the unanimous approval of the Board of Trustees for the Maine Community College System, York County Community College (YCCC) is honoring the 92 year old aviation institution, Pratt & Whitney, for its long term support of YCCC , which includes $700,000 in direct financial contributions for construction of a new academic building on the Wells Campus. Pratt & Whitney has also donated more than $300,000 in equipment for the college’s aviation-related precision machining offered through their Technology Program. The combined contributions of over $1 million is the largest ever received by the college from a single donor. Once completed, the new building will be dedicated and named for the Pratt & Whitney Company.
Pratt & Whitney has been manufacturing and repairing many technically advanced aircraft engine components at its nearby North Berwick operation since moving a portion of their manufacturing to that location in 1979. Also, it’s worth noting the North Berwick plant is the largest manufacturing facility under one roof in Maine, as well as employing approximately 1,600 persons. Both Pratt & Whitney and YCCC’s Technology Program are committed to the advancement of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering & Math) related fields; this cooperative venture will further high tech job opportunities right here in the State of Maine.
